Windmore History & Programs

For more than 40 years, Windmore has championed the arts across the Northern Piedmont, offering creative opportunities that connect, inspire, and uplift our community. Now entering an exciting new chapter at the State Theater of Culpeper, we’re expanding our programs which now include Theatrical Arts, Visual Arts, Music and Literary Arts and deepening our impact—building a true home for the arts in the heart of Culpeper and beyond.

Windmore’s Theatrical Arts program provides community theatre experiences for adults, teens, and children—both on stage and behind the scenes. Participants have the opportunity to perform, work backstage, design and build sets, create costumes, apply stage make-up, and operate lighting and sound equipment. In addition to producing high-quality theatrical and musical performances, the program offers educational classes and collaborates with local ensembles to enrich the arts in our community. We welcome performers of all backgrounds to audition and encourage everyone to share their unique talents and voice, ensuring our shows reflect the creativity and diversity of our community.

Each summer, our popular Musical Theater Camp gives students a chance to dive into the full production experience—learning everything from auditioning, acting, and singing to choreography, set design, makeup, and more—culminating in a live performance that showcases their growth and talent.

Windmore’s Visual Arts program nurtures creativity through painting, drawing, photography, and other fine arts. Participants can take classes, attend workshops, and showcase their work in exhibitions, connecting with local artists and the wider community.

Windmore’s Music program brings people together through lessons, workshops, ensembles, and concerts. Musicians and vocalists of all ages can learn, perform, and share their talents while building confidence and fostering a love of music.

Our Band unites musicians from middle school through adulthood in a welcoming, all-skill-level ensemble dedicated to the joy of making music together. It’s a space where generations learn from and inspire one another, creating a rare blend of mentorship, collaboration, and shared passion. The band performs free concerts throughout the year and brings live music to events across the region—proving that music truly is for everyone, at every stage of life.

Windmore’s Literary Arts program celebrates the written and spoken word through readings, workshops, and publications. Writers, readers, and storytellers of all ages can develop their skills, share their work, and connect with other voices in the community.

Our writers group is a welcoming community of writers who gather monthly to share their work, exchange ideas, and support one another’s creative journey. From first drafts to published pieces, this program offers workshops on creative writing, memoir, and publishing to help writers grow in skill and confidence. All experience levels are encouraged to join—whether you’re just getting started or already crafting your next chapter.

When you give, you fuel creativity, connection, and lifelong learning right here in our community. Thank you for helping us keep the arts alive and accessible to all.
