Providing shelter, support and advocacy to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
Thank you for your interest in SAFE and for supporting survivors of abuse! Many people think we only provide emergency shelter, but our work extends far beyond that.
Our mission is to offer safety, support, and empowerment to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. While we do provide a secure and comforting shelter for those in immediate danger—including their pets—our services go much further. We offer one-on-one counseling, support groups, financial assistance, crisis intervention via our 24-hour hotline, and access to vital community resources. Our advocacy services include court accompaniment and assistance with protective orders, ensuring survivors have the support they need to share their stories and navigate the legal system.
SAFE serves adult men and women, as well as children through our Children’s Program. Our Hispanic Outreach Coordinator and advocates extend these same services to the underserved Latino community across the five counties we serve. Whatever a survivor’s need may be, we strive to meet it—all at no cost and with complete confidentiality.
For those looking to get involved, our Volunteer Training Program prepares individuals to serve survivors with trauma-informed awareness. We also engage the community through educational presentations, awareness events, and partnerships with local businesses and organizations. SAFE is the only program in our five-county region (Culpeper, Madison, Orange, Rappahannock, and Fauquier) that provides both shelter and comprehensive support services for survivors.
Domestic violence and sexual assault affect more people than we realize—it may not be your story, but it could be the story of a friend, coworker, or loved one. By supporting SAFE, you help provide life-saving resources and a path to a future free from abuse. Together, we can make a difference
We often will ask clients to tell us what they think would have happened if we did not exist. We hear things such as the following:
"I probably would have gone back to my abuser because of my kids."
"I would have had to live in my car or on the streets."
"I might have been killed."
We at times hear very difficult stories. We exist to try to turn those stories into empowerment and healing for the client.
