FAQs for Donors

All participating organizations are recognized as a 501(c)3 Public Charity and are required to file an IRS form 990 (or 990 postcard for smaller organizations) and serve the populations of Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison and Rappahannock counties. Private foundations who file a 990-PF are not eligible. All organizations must be in good standing with the IRS and with the general public.

Anyone with a credit card, debit card, or bank account and access to the Internet.

While the purpose of the online giving day is to encourage the use of secure and easy online philanthropy, we understand that some will prefer to donate via check. Checks will be counted towards an organization’s final donation total and the Bonus Pool, but do not count for prizes. We are unable to accept cash.

Note that if a donor is contributing to more than one organization, and most of our donors do, please write a separate check per organization. It would be wonderful to have an email address with checks so that we can confirm the donation with the donor and the nonprofit.

Checks must be made out to the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, with the designated charity written in the memo line. All checks must be in hand (at the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation offices) the day before the event by 5:00 pm.

The Northern Piedmont Community Foundation mailing address is

PO BOX 182, WARRENTON, VA 20188

The Office physical address is

321 WALKER DRIVE 3rd Floor WARRENTON VA

On the day of the event (or during Early Giving starting two weeks before), go to www.givelocalpiedmont.org and type in the name of the nonprofit(s) to which you want to give. If you are looking for a charity to support, you can search by category. Your chosen nonprofit will have a donation page on www.givelocalpiedmont.org where you can enter in the amount you want to donate.

Donations can be made via debit card, credit card, PayPal, ApplePay, and ACH (bank account) through www.givelocalpiedmont.org.  MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express will be accepted. We are unable to accept cash.

For donations over $50, the website will give you the option of submitting payment through your bank account. This could save you and/or the benefitting organization on transaction fees. For donors that give via their bank account, credit card processing fees will be replaced by a 1% transaction fee, plus a $1.50 fixed fee per transaction (total ACH processing fees will be capped at $5.00). The ACH process is still subject to the 2.5% website platform fee and the 2% NPCF fee supporting marketing and advertising for the event.

While the purpose of the online giving day is to encourage the use of secure and easy online philanthropy, we understand that some will prefer to donate via check. Checks will be counted towards an organization’s final donation total, but only online donations are eligible to compete for prizes.

Checks must be made out to the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, with the designated charity written in the memo line. Checks will be accepted until 5:00 pm the day before the event.

If a donor is contributing to more than one organization, and most of our donors do, please write one check per organization. It would be wonderful to have an email address with checks so that we can confirm the donation with the donor and the nonprofit.

All donations are tax deductible and irrevocable and will be for the unrestricted use of your chosen charity.  See additional information on tax receipts. Your receipt will say “MCF” on it and funds will go through the Mightycause Charitable Foundation. Funds are then disbursed to your chosen charities.

Yes.  The Give Local Piedmont website is powered by Mightycause, and is a secure PCI Level 2 compliant site for donating to your favorite charities. You can be sure your personal information is protected when you donate through www.givelocalpiedmont.org

Email addresses will only be used to transmit electronic tax receipt(s) for donations made through Give Local Piedmont, as well as a post-event survey. This notice will count as the receipt for each donor.

Your name, email address and billing address will be shared with the organization(s) to which your donations will be credited unless you've requested to remain anonymous.  The Northern Piedmont Community Foundation does not retain credit card information and your personal data will not be shared with or sold to any outside vendors or third parties.

The recommended minimum gift is $10.  There is no maximum dollar amount per gift or maximum dollar amount per charity.

Certain prizes will be awarded to organizations based on the number of unique gifts they receive.  A unique donation is defined as one gift (or multiple gifts) to one organization from one donor.  Multiple donations made by the same donor to different organizations will count as a unique gift to each organization. Donations from different people in the same household will count as unique gifts.

Donations via cash or stocks will not be accepted.

In order for gifts to count for Give Local Piedmont, they must be made through the Give Local Piedmont portal during Early Giving or on the day of the event.

In order for gifts to count for timed prizes, they must be made through the Give Local Piedmont portal during the event only.

All donations will be granted for unrestricted use by the chosen nonprofits.

Yes. This information will be provided to your designated charity.

Gifts made during Give Local Piedmont are not eligible for corporate employee matching.

Gifts may be made through donor advised funds held with NPCF.  Donors must make arrangements with NPCF staff prior to the event to do so.  Please reach out to communityservices@npcf.org or lrose@npcf.org before Early Giving if you would like to donate to an organization through your Donor Advised Fund.

Unless you indicated that you prefer to remain anonymous, your name will be provided to the nonprofit and may appear in print and electronic donor listings.

There is no fee to you as a donor nor is there a fee for a nonprofit to participate in the giving event. There are 4.7% in transaction fees for credit card and platform costs as well as a 2% administrative fee to NPCF on both online and check donations. Organizations earning less than $1,000 during Give Local Piedmont will receive the 2% NPCF administrative fee back. These fees are deducted from the donations received - unless, at the time of donation, the donor chooses to cover the fees in addition to their donation. Donors will receive an immediate email thank you and tax receipt for 100% of their donation, minus the fee, should the donor choose to cover it.  In last year's Give Local Piedmont over 92% of all donors opted to relieve the nonprofits of this associative cost. Additionally, participating nonprofits are also eligible for additional funds thanks to our sponsors.  Participating nonprofits will share in over $100,000 of additional support due to their generosity.

Your credit card statement will read: MCF * plus the name of your chosen nonprofit or just MCF * Give Local Piedmont if you donate to more than one nonprofit. MCF stands for Mightycause Charitable Foundation. All Give Local Piedmont funds will go through MCF first and then be distributed to each nonprofit after the event.

Yes. All donors will receive an immediate acknowledgement and tax receipt via the email address that was provided at the time of the donation(s). We recommend printing this for your tax records.

For tax reporting purposes, if you donated online your donation was made to Mightycause Charitable Foundation as noted on your receipt. If you donated by check, your donation was made to Northern Piedmont Community Foundation. All donations are distributed to the nonprofits after the event.

Following the event, you may request another copy of your tax receipt by emailing support@mightycause.com. Please indicate which nonprofit you donated to during Give Local Piedmont in your email to them as well as the email address you used when making the donation.

Alternatively, you can create a user account on givelocalpiedmont.org and retrieve your tax receipt through your online portal. Click here for a support article with instructions.
